Body Armour

Personal Effects

Delicately and reverently, soldiers and Marines at the Joint Personal Effects Depot inventoried the belongings of Americans killed in Iraq, Afghanistan or other trouble spots. They then shipped the possessions to grieving next of kin, carrying out their duties in two nondescript warehouse buildings at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

The depot has been around since the early days of the Iraq war, cataloging and processing personal effects from combat bases and stateside posts in order to return those items to their rightful owners, or at least the ones who deserve them. In a recent visit, long paper-covered tables held a deck of cards, three green match packs bearing pictures of Saddam Hussein, uniforms and a seemingly endless supply of socks.

Despite their demanding job, the staff has a happy and healthy work environment. They enjoy the fact that they are able to help the families of their fallen comrades, something that most civilians are not.

While the JPED is not responsible for a deceased service member’s medical records, it does offer its staff a number of other services to assist with surviving family members and friends in their time of need. Among those is a specialized team of forensic anthropologists that can trace the whereabouts of a deceased service member’s remains. This service is free of charge and available to any service member, their spouse or dependent child.
